Radio 1's Nick Grimshaw made his debut as one of the new X Factor judges earlier today, as auditions took place in Manchester.

He was speculated to be joining the talent show's judging panel for months on end and finally, Nick was confirmed as an X Factor judge along with Rita Ora for this year's series of the show.

Today, things finally got underway as the judges arrived in Manchester for the first round of auditions and it's safe to say Nick looked pretty pleased to be there.

Rocking up to Event City, Nick looked his usual cool self, rocking black skinny jeans, a leather jacket and his trademark quiff. He was the first of the judges to arrive, following new hosts Caroline Flack and Olly Murs.

This series, Nick will join Rita, Simon Cowell and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini in the search for the UK's next singing star.

Ahead of getting starting, he has said: "I love X Factor and have watched the series religiously since it started, so obviously I'm hugely excited to be joining the show. Music is my job and my passion and I'm really looking forward to seeing what talent we can find and nurture this year. I can't wait for Judges Houses in Oldham!"

Following news Nick would be joining the judging line-up, many were quick to criticise Simon's choice. But despite some not wanting Nick for the job, he has received plenty of support from many others.

Former Xtra Factor host Sarah-Jane Crawford insisted Nick was a "good choice" by Simon. She said: "Us radio DJs, we know what we're doing when it comes to new talent. If a popstar can make a call, why can't a DJ?"

Music mogul Simon also jumped to Nick's defence, insisting his addition wasn't a strange decision.

"I have an issue with artists judging other artists," he said. "I would never allow a group of artists to run the record label, that would be crazy. You have to balance it up a bit."

Cheryl, meanwhile, returns to her judging seat for another year running. This will be her fifth time on the panel.

This time round, Cheryl has said she is "more excited than ever".

"I haven't been as excited about an X Factor season since I first became a judge," she tweeted.

"The addition of Rita and Grimmy along with some interesting changes we've made to the format has refocused us to do what we do best, finding talent and making stars. I cannot wait to get started!"
