Simon Cowell has defended his decision to hire Nick Grimshaw as a judge on The X Factor.

Last month it was revealed that Radio 1 DJ Nick would be joining the ITV panel show alongside fellow newbie Rita Ora. They join Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and head judge Simon on the panel.

Nick Grimshaw will be joining the X Factor panel.

However, Nick's appointment as a judge was a strange choice to some because he is not a musician.

But Simon has backed Nick and stood by his decision, telling The Sun: "I have an issue with artists judging other artists. I would never allow a group of artists to run the record label, that would be crazy. You have to balance it up a bit.

"When I first appeared on TV no one knew who I was. I just ran a record label, I actually never got paid for the first time I did Pop Idol. I thought, 'God, this is amazing, I can sit on the show and find artists. It's fantastic'."

The new series of The X Factor will see a lot of changes to the format: "It's got to lighten up. It all got a bit heavy last year," Simon added.

Along with the new judges, Simon has appointed Olly Murs and Caroline Flack as main hosts.
