The Hollywood couple confirmed widespread rumours of a split in a statement issued to People magazine on Tuesday night (30 June).
It read: "After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time.
"This will be our only comment on this private, family matter. Thank you for understanding."
Jennifer and Ben are parents to daughters Violet, nine, and Seraphina, six, and three-year-old son Samuel.
Initially believed to have one of the strongest marriages in Hollywood, there had been speculation of trouble in their relationship over recent weeks but this was the couple's first comment on the matter.
Their joint statement was issued the day after they celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary, which fell on Monday,.
Rumours of an imminent divorce announcement began in May, when US tabloids alleged Ben and Jen were already separated and planning to publicly announce their split ahead of what would have been their ten-year wedding anniversary.
That came as a massive surprise to many fans, given how Jennifer just said in a recent interview about how they stayed strong after having children.
"You just go on a ride together because you don't know who you're going to be when you first have a baby and you don't know who [your partner] is going to be. You have to just hang in there while you figure it out — and have a lot of patience for each other," she told Yahoo! Parenting.
And last year, Ben told People he was "very lucky" to have such a "great wife" in Jen, who he met on the set of Pearl Harbour. They later starred together in action movie Daredevil.
They married in a private ceremony in 2005.
