The Liberty X singer and Big Reunion star has had a tough time in recent years after undergoing a double mastectomy and hysterectomy.
She told ITV's Lorraine today: "He's my rock. He's been there for me from the very beginning and it's been a rough ride the last few years. We've been through a lot. And hopefully tonight when everyone watches they can see that we are a strong unit and that our kids make us whole."
Tonight is a reference to their ITV2 show Seven Days With… which airs this evening. Cameras followed the couple in their daily lives for a week, allowing viewers a glimpse behind their closed doors.
Michelle admitted it "took a bit of persuasion" to get Hugh on board, saying: "He's not used to that side of things. He's a very private man and I respect that but I think I won on this one!"
Hugh said: "It was good, you kind of get used to it I suppose and I was a bit more honest than I thought I was going to be. You let your guard down a little bit but it was a nice show to do."
He said that he and Michelle "work hard" to make their romance work, saying: "Like anyone with two young kids, you have to pull on each other, especially with two of us working. We complement each other well."
Hugh said it had been tough seeing Michelle going through her health battles, adding: "The saving grace for us was that Michelle was so strong through everything. Whilst it was hard, we went through it as a couple and we came out the other side stronger."
