X Factor star Jake Quickenden has suffered his fair share of heartache, but he insists it has giving him a new outlook on life that sees him live every day to its fullest.

Before he shot to fame on The X Factor, Jake tragically lost his father and younger brother to cancer in the space of four years. And while he admits he was angry at first to lose his loved ones, Jake says dealing with his grief has taught him a valuable life lesson along the way.

Opening up to aTEEN in their new issue, he said: "Life is so precious and I never want to take another day for granted."

Insisting he tries to live his life to the full, Jake credits his mum for keeping him going all these years later.

"I had the support of the strongest woman I know - my mum," he said. "It was a long process and one that I can never get over... Losing somebody is always hard, but like anybody that has been through this, you find the strength within and slowly piece yourself back together."

With both his dad and brother falling ill to the same disease, Jake reveals he has to go for constant check-ups to monitor his own health. The 26-year-old had a scare of his own last year, after finding a lump in his leg.

Despite finding his precautionary check-ups scary, Jake hasn't let that get in the way of living his life. Not only did he reach the X Factor's live shows, he came runner-up on the last series of I'm A Celebrity and is now embarking on his own music career, after penning a series of original songs.

Reveal caught up with Jake at a recent showcase for his new music where he told us he is excited to be setting his sights on future chart success.

Having penned three original tracks, Jake is now hoping to bag himself a record deal, enticing labels in with his new single 'I Want You'. Turning away from his usual choice of ballad songs where he would channel his personal experiences into his writing, the singer revealed his new track is "upbeat, catchy and fun".

Ahead of performing, Jake reiterated his new found attitude he spoke of in his recent a-TEEN interview, telling the crowd he is ready to go after his own opportunities.

"Life's too short to be morbid," he claimed. "I move quick in my life, it's important to as you don't know what could be around the corner."

He expressed the same sentiment when it came to his girlfriend Danielle Fogarty.

The pair have been dating since earlier this year and have already moved in together.

Asked if he thinks a proposal could be on the cards, Jake told us: "Obviously it's too early to tell, but I wouldn't have moved in if I wasn't serious about her. I'm not somebody to dilly dally around, if I want something, I'll try and get it."
