Speaking on ITV's Lorraine earlier today (15 June), Gemma said: "Going back the second time around has been such an amazing experience. First time it was a little bit like rabbit in the headlights and then I came back and these people that I work with are so talented, so loving and so giving.

"I am going to miss it but it's always going to be in my heart."

Viewers have already seen Rachel violently attack boyfriend Sam Dingle following her custody battle with one-time fling Jai over their son Archie.

Gemma, who made her debut on the soap in 2011, said it is quite "scary" to be acting out such a sensitive subject: "It's very full on at the minute. It's a little bit scary with this storyline because obviously it's very to the bone and affects, unfortunately, thousands of people out there.

"What we're trying to do is show the emotional side of the abuse as well as the physical."

Emmerdale airs weekdays on ITV1 at 7pm.
