Radio 1's Nick Grimshaw is new X Factor judge - but is he the right choice?

So, the worst kept secret in showbiz is out: Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw has been announced as the new X Factor judge to replace Louis Walsh.

Alongside fellow newbie Rita Ora, who was a judge on The Voice UK last year, Nick, 30, will sit on the judging panel alongside Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Simon Cowell.

To some, Nick's appointment as a judge may seem like a strange choice. He's not a singer or musician in any form, and has no experience in the business side of the music industry.

How will Nick be able to judge acts at auditions? What advice will he give them if he's not a performer himself? How will he be able to mentor any of the categories and give them the guidance they need to get far in the competition? And will he translate well from radio to TV?

These are all worthy points to raise, but here's a few reasons why his new job as a judge might not be so bad after all...

Nick is a huge music fan (obviously)!
Nick is actually a massive music fan (hence his radio job), but in particular, he loves listening to hip-hop music. Surely his passion for current music will help when critiquing singing hopefuls?!

He admits he can't sing, but that doesn't mean he can't rap...
Nick told us in 2013: "It's one of the worst things that I can't sing. My voice is like even flatter than my speaking voice, it's so horrible, it annoys me. I'm good at rapping though, I'm flatter than Drake!"

He will be a natural on TV...
Nick already fronts BBC Three's topical panel show, Sweat The Small Stuff, where he, the team captains and a studio audience discuss their pet hates. Saying this, he probably won't be watching himself back on TV, after telling us in 2013: "I can't watch myself on TV. It's weird because I live alone, so essentially I would be in my house, on my own, watching myself."

He knows A LOT of people...
Nick is notoriously well-connected and counts Rita, Harry Styles, Kate Moss, Kelly Osborne, Pixie Geldof and Daisy Lowe as some of his closest friends. Whoever he mentors should count themselves lucky, as no doubt Nick will be able to put them in the direction of some much sought-after stars.

He can be quite funny...
Nick is pretty funny and he has been known to kick off his radio show with a hangover. We wonder how he's going to cope every Monday morning after having a live Sunday night show?! He's always got anecdotes to tell and he pretty much has the insider know-how, all thanks to his showbiz pals, of course. Due to his quick-witted humour, we can imagine Nick playfully poking fun at Simon, something similar to Simon and David Waliiams' relationship on Britain's Got Talent.

He'll unleash his quirky fashion sense...
If there's a catwalk show going on, you're probably going to find Nick on the front row. As a regular on the fashion scene and a menswear ambassador for the British Fashion Council, Nick's style is sure to contrast with Simon's white shirt and bootcut jeans combo.

He's bound to raise the show's profile...
Nick joined BBC Radio 1 in 2012, and landed the primetime breakfast slot (which saw him take over from Chris Moyles) in a bid to attract younger listeners. The latest figures from Nick's breakfast show indicate 5.5 million listeners, so that's a pretty big audience.
