The professional dancer told ITV's Loose Women that she felt pushed to breaking point trying to juggle her mother's battle with breast cancer and negative stories in some parts of the media.
She explained: "I was in a bad place because my mother was suffering with a breast cancer scare and some press were so horrific at that time that I thought that maybe there was a time where I needed to step out. She [my mother] was extremely upset and she was absolutely devastated to read some of those things."
Kristina said she wanted the focus to remain on her dancing, rather than what happens off-camera.
"I didn't come on the show to be portrayed in a certain way or for my private life to be slashed across the papers, because we all want some privacy."
Panellist Jane Moore, however, said that as Kristina had done photoshoots with magazines in the past - including with former partner Joe Calzaghe - surely she understood why she would be written about?
She replied: "I just don't think it always has to be negative publicity, because also they don't really know the truth and the thing is, it's really up to me and the person I'm with to live our life and decide what's right, what's wrong."
Kristina will return to this year's Strictly as a pro dancer.
