Sammy Winward has been keeping busy since leaving Emmerdale this year, as not only has she landed a part in a new drama, but she's also penned a children's book.

In February, viewers watched as Sammy bowed out of the soap as Katie Sugden after 13 years.

Her exit resulted in a dramatic showdown between Katie and brother-in-law Robert Sugden, as Katie fell to her death after Robert threw her across some unsafe floorboards at Wylie's Farm.

Speaking on ITV's This Morning earlier today (4 June), Sammy said: "I was a bit unsure at first as to what was to happen to the character, but now I'm happy she's been killed off, because I'm not ever looking over my shoulder, wondering 'what if', with the option to go back.

"It's spurred me on to do other things and worker harder to do well."

Sammy, 29, is currently in the middle of filming the second series of ITV drama Prey, in which she plays a heavily pregnant woman whose father tries to rescue her from danger.

Sammy described her new role as "a completely different experience" as it's been the first time in a long time that she's walked on set and has not known anybody.

Sammy's latest project is a children's historical book, Princess Phoebe Meets The Tudors, which was actually inspired by her nine-year-old daughter, Mia.

She added: "If I hadn't have been an actress I would have loved to have been a historian. I've always had a massive passion for history, and knew that I wanted to do something with it.

"I always used to tell Mia stories about different characters through history, like Boudica or Joan of Arc or Elizabeth I. She was fascinated."
