Sam Smith has undergone vocal cord surgery.

The 'Stay With Me' singer is recovering after successful surgery to stop reccurent vocal cord bleeding at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, according to a statement released by doctors.

"This condition is the result of unstable blood vessels in the vocal cord that can rupture and prevent vocal performance," said the statement (via People).

Sam's surgery was performed by Dr. Steven Zeitels, who has previously operated on the likes of Adele, Steven Tyler and Lionel Richie. He pioneered the use of procedures including "specialised lasers to stop vocal cord bleeding in singers."

He expects Sam to make a full recovery.

Sam announced earlier this month he would have to undergo surgery after his vocal cord issues led him to cancel dates on his Australian tour. He admitted he was nervous about going under the knife but looking forward to being back on stage.

He's now on vocal rest which means NO TALKING.

Sam won the 'Top Male Artist' prize at the Billboard Music Awards over the weekend but was unable to attend the Las Vegas ceremony. Instead, he gave a Love Actually-style cue card acceptance speech.
