Simon Cowell is said to be keen to sign Radio 1 DJ Nick for the ITV talent show in a bid to boost ratings ahead of its return later this year.
According to The Mirror, X Factor bosses are "close to signing him"
A source told the newspaper: "Grimmy is one of the most well connected men in showbiz and will make a brilliant judge. It's clear Cowell's hope is that he will attract new viewers and artists to the show. He feels fresher and more relevant than some of the previous judges."
Although Nick's contract with BBC could make a move to ITV difficult, producers are "confident" something can be worked out.
An X Factor spokesperson said: "There is a great deal of speculation over the judging line-up for this year's series. However, no formal decision has been made."
News of Nick joining the show comes as reports suggested long-standing judge Louis Walsh has been axed after 11 years.
This morning, Simon confirmed Louis' exit, saying: "Louis Walsh is one of the good guys. We will always be friends. The door remains open and who knows what's next..."
However, Louis had previously hinted at his exit, saying in an interview in April that he was "done" with the show.
He said on the Seven O'Clock Show: "I think I'm done with X Factor. I've done 11 seasons. That's a long time on television. I think they're going to change the show. I think they're going to get new faces."
This year's show is set to have a huge shake-up in dynamics. Dermot O'Leary left as main host after eight years. He has been replaced by former Xtra Factor co-hosts Olly Murs and Caroline Flack, making them the first duo to host the main show.
Although it's yet to be officially confirmed, it is thought Simon and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini will be returning to the judging panel.
