Sam Smith announced today (7 May) that he'll be undergoing surgery next week after his vocal cords failed to heal.

Last week the singer was forced to axe dates on his Australian tour due to a haemorrhage on his vocal cords.

He's now revealed on an Instagram post, that surgery is needed to fix the problem.

Sam offered further explanation alongside the post: "Bad news. I have my operation booked for next week, so getting really nervous.

It's not all doom and gloom though, Sam announced: "By doing this in 8 weeks time I'm gonna be able to sing like never before so it's worth it." Well that is good news! And also slightly mind-blowing because how can that voice get any better?!

The BRIT Award winner continued, "I am so sorry to all. Dreading the next month though, I can't speak for THREE WEEKS after the op."
