Fifty Shades producer Michael DeLuca said that Niall is an "outstanding writer in his own right" and they were happy to have him on board.

There are three books in E.L. James' multi-million pound Fifty Shades franchise: Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.

The first book was turned into a Hollywood blockbuster this year, which broke box office records and took in more than half a billion dollars in ticket sales.

Sam Taylor-Johnson directed the erotic film, with Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan taking on the main roles of naïve student Ana Steele and brooding billionaire Christian Grey.

British-born Sam will not return to direct the sequel.
