Producer Naughty Boy - real name Shahid Khan - posted a new track in the early hours of the morning, which features vocals from Zayn.
The track, titled 'I Won't Mind', was shared on Soundcloud with Naughty Boy telling fans on Twitter: "Let the music do the talking guys. Thank us later."
However, the track appeared to anger some loyal One Direction fans, who felt it was too soon following Zayn's shock exit last week.
Naughty Boy also posted the track just hours after he was embroiled in a Twitter spat with Zayn's former bandmate Louis Tomlinson.
Louis lashed out at the producer, calling him "inconsiderate" and demanding that he "f**king grow up" after Naughty Boy retweeted a video about him and Zayn under the collaborative name of Zaughty.
Louis said Naughty Boy was "clearly trying to wind the fans up", while the producer simply told him to "let the other boys talk for a change".
Longtime friends Naughty Boy and Zayn have been in the studio together since last year, and Naughty Boy already confirmed earlier this month that Zayn will feature on his album.
Naughty Boy told The Sun: "It's a good time for Zayn to showcase what he can really do. I don't think that is being fully exploited with the band because there are five people and it needs to be balanced out."
Naughty Boy said at the time that Simon Cowell was "very happy with the song and supports the whole thing".
Last week, Zayn quit One Direction after five years in the band.
He said he wanted to live life like a "normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight", but it has been heavily reported that he is set to carve out a solo career.
