Former X Factor judge Gary will tell a story about 11 members of the Women's Institute in Rylstone, North Yorkshire, who pose nude for a charity calendar in 1999.
The plot is thought to be inspired by the hit 2003 movie Calendar Girls, which starred Julie Walters and Helen Mirren.
BBC News reports that the 44-year-old singer's new project is being backed by tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire.
News of Gary's musical was revealed by the tourism board as part of a string of promotional events across the region.
Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: "To have someone of Gary Barlow's calibre working on a Yorkshire musical is amazing and I am sure, like the Calendar Girls film and the stage play, this musical will be a huge success."
