TOWIE's Ferne McCann is said to be "heartbroken" following her split from Charlie Sims.

Earlier today, Charlie announced he had quit the ITVBe reality show, and he hit out at Ferne and his sister Chloe Sims in a series of tweets.

Now a source has exclusively told Reveal that the couple have split after Charlie gave her an ultimatum.

"Unfortunately Charlie has given Ferne an ultimatum – it's him or the show," a source tells us. "This came as a huge shock to Ferne who is really upset that he would put her in such a position.

"She loves being part of TOWIE and is an important character who is great for the show. She's very successful off the back of it.

"The reality is that Charlie has never wanted to live his life on camera. Ferne has promised to support him either way and just wants him to do the same for her."

Charlie made his return to TOWIE during this current series after taking a break to focus on his deli.

Their split is said to be "very raw" and has left an emotional Ferne unsure of what to do next.

"Ferne is heartbroken that Charlie has taken to Twitter but it's all very raw so who knows what will happen," our source adds. "Hopefully he will realise he can't dictate her career, it feels unfair to suddenly from nowhere put her in this position.

"She's hoping he'll realise this and they'll make it up, but right now Ferne is unsure what to do and is just very upset."

Charlie's exit from the show follows on from last night's episode, where his cousin Frankie Essex returned to comfort his sister Chloe, who has been upset following her estrangement from Charlie.

Frankie also claimed that Ferne has "got into Charlie's head", but Ferne slammed these accusations last night.

Chloe spoke to Frankie about the situation with Charlie in last night's episode.

Things have been very strained between Chloe and Charlie recently, partly because of past tension between Chloe and Ferne, but also because Chloe made a comment about how their cousin Joey Essex is like a brother to her.

Our source tells us that Ferne has been hoping Chloe and Charlie would patch up their differences: "She has been proactively encouraging him to make amends with Chloe and his family but the fact everyone wrongly thinks she is to blame for Charlie and Chloe falling out has put a strain on their relationship."

Deli owner Charlie shocked fans earlier today when he revealed he didn't want to be part of the hit reality series anymore.

He tweeted: "So sad to not lose one but two people you love dearly to a TV show. Everyone can point the finger at me. But I have morals and dignity and some sort of self respect. I wish @Chloe_Sims and @fernemccann the best with their lives. But always live knowing you chose the show.

"Stay true to who you are. Today I became me the real Charlie Sims. And so another chapter begins."

Charlie and Ferne's split is said to be "very raw".

Since then, a TOWIE rep has confirmed he is no longer part of the show, telling Reveal: "We haven't been able to film with Charlie for several days because he hasn't felt comfortable sharing his real life on camera and that is an essential part of being in TOWIE.

"As such we have decided he will no longer be part of the show; we agree that it wouldn't be right for him to continue and wish him well in the future."

Charlie took a break from TOWIE in November last year to focus on his deli, but he returned this year for the current 14th series.
