Melissa Rivers has responded to criticism of the Oscars leaving her late mother Joan out of this year's 'In Memoriam' tribute.

Every year at the Academy Awards, guests take a few minutes to remember those who made a lasting contribution to the movie industry and have sadly passed away during the last twelve months.

Following this year's ceremony on Sunday night (22 February), many viewers took to social media to express anger that comedienne and TV host Joan had not been included.

She was a familiar face during awards season thanks to her red carpet coverage on the likes of E! show Fashion Police.

Following the public outcry, her daughter Melissa released a statement on Facebook saying: "It would have been nice, especially considering the impact she had on the awards season, but Cooper and I have been overwhelmed with support and love over my mum's passing and we choose to focus on that."

A statement from the Oscars added: "Joan Rivers is among the many worthy artists and filmmakers we were unfortunately unable to feature in the In Memoriam segment of this year's Oscar show. She is, however, included in our In Memoriam gallery on"

Joan passed away at the age of 81 in September 2014.
