Richard Blackwood has admitted he cried after hearing he landed the role of EastEnders' new villain.

This week marks the 30th anniversary of the BBC One soap, and not only will viewers find out who killed Lucy Beale, they'll also get to see Richard make his Albert Square debut live on air.

Ahead of his entrance, the former MTV presenter admits he was at breaking point before joining EastEnders. So much so that after bagging himself the role of the East End's new bad boy, he burst into tears.

"When I got the role I went back to my car and I started to cry," he revealed. "I couldn't believe it. [It's] changed my life."

After auditioning for the show three times, Richard told The Mirror he was convinced he wasn't going to be offered the part and was planning a move to America. Luckily for him though, he was and we'll now be seeing a lot more of the 42-year-old on our screens.

Thankful for his new acting job, Richard said the role has come after a difficult few years.

Opening up on his struggle with having no work, the Shrek: The Musical star explained he went through a "dark time" after being declared bankrupt.

"When I was made bankrupt, it was hard," he admitted. "I was one of the first young guys from the MTV era to be deemed to have it all and then to lose it all... I was depressed, I was even suicidal. It was a very dark time.

"But I believe an angel was there protecting me [through it] and I will never forget that. I do have a tattoo on my chest of an angel. You'll see me touching my chest when I'm doing my lines."

Now looking forward to showing fans a different side to him, Richard has teased there will be more to his EastEnders character than meets the eye.

He added: "He's got a dark side to him which is great for the show and me as an actor, but he is still a human being. He is your best friend and your worst enemy. You are going to see another side to me."

Richard joins the soap right in the middle of its 30th anniversary special. As well as his entrance, viewers will see the return of EastEnders' favourite Barbara Windsor (Peggy Mitchell), John Partridge who plays Christian Clarke and many more familiar faces.

Eek! We can't wait.
