Fifty Shades of Grey broke box office records at the weekend.

The erotic movie based on the novel by E.L. James opened in UK and Ireland cinemas on Friday, 13 February and rocketed to the top of the box office chart with takings of £13.5 million in just one weekend!

That massive box office haul means Fifty Shades broke records for the biggest 18-rated movie opening, and biggest opening for a non-franchise or sequel, as well as biggest opening for the Valentine's Day weekend.

Oh, and it's also the biggest opening of 2015 so far!

Raking in £13.5 million in UK and Ireland cinemas across the weekend meant an average of £23,000 per cinema screen which was more than the rest of the top ten films combined. Wow!

Perhaps it's no surprise, however, given the insane amount of interest in the flick.

We already knew it had broken pre-sale ticket records with the Odeon cinema claiming to be selling one every seven seconds, and then of course there's the fact Fifty Shades is based on a book trilogy which has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide.

Oh, and the trailer for the movie has garnered 250 million views!

All in all, you'd expect it to be a success, right?!

It's not just over here that Fifty Shades dominated the box office. In the States, it took an incredible $81.7 million across the three-day weekend, making it the highest grossing Valentine's Day movie over there.

Fifty Shades is rated R in America meaning under 17s need to be accompanied by an adult if they wish to see it.

Universal Pictures has said 68% of audiences in the US were female.

It's reported that Fifty Shades took around £102 million across the world this weekend. Pretty incredible!

Already, director Sam Taylor-Johnson has signed on for the sequels, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.
