Adam thanked Corrie in the EastEnders acceptance speech

It came after a difficult week for Corrie, who have been grieving following the sudden death of Anne on Monday night. She was just 60 years old.

Addressing the numerous Corrie stars in the crowd, Adam said: "I would like to say a big thank you to Coronation Street because without you there would be no EastEnders.

"There would be no Phil and Ian. There'd be no Mick and Linda, no Kat and Alfie. Without your enduring characters like Ken and Deirdre. So, if you don't mind, we'd like to accept this for the Weatherfield One."

His speech was met by rousing applause from the Corrie cast and the huge audience at London's O2 Arena.

The Corrie cast gave EastEnders a standing ovation.

Adam wasn't the only person to reference the beloved Anne during last night's ceremony. Host Dermot O'Leary took a moment at the start of the evening to thank the Corrie cast for coming at such a difficult time and pass on his condolences.

Anne's co-star and TV husband Bill Roache also paid tribute to the late actress in a very moving segment in which he reflected on their characters and their real life bond.

"For over 40 years our dear friend Anne played the part of Deirdre and she became one of the best loved and enduring characters on British TV.

"With her husky voice and trademark spectacles, the nation took her dearly to their hearts."

William Roache remembered Anne with a poignant tribute.

"As the characters Ken and Deirdre, we felt we'd met our soulmates and no matter what was thrown at us – Deirdre's wrongful imprisonment or the compelling love triangle with Mike Baldwin – we always found our way back to one another.

"The nation seemed to want us together and I feel so blessed, honoured and privileged to have had these years working with Anne. What I'll remember is her vibrant, warm heart: the loving person who came to work each day and gave us all a hug and brightened up our lives."

William added that Anne's family and the Coronation Street family had been "deeply touched at the outpouring of love" following her passing.

"We share your grief and sadness at losing such a beautiful person who will be so greatly missed by us all. I love you Anne."
