Emma, who plays Charity Macey in the ITV soap, announced her happy baby news in a video message last night after viewers watched Charity handed a two year sentence in court.
Saying a temporary goodbye to fans, Emma said in a video on the ITV website: "So you've all just witnessed the big finale of Charity being brought to justice... I do have a mixture of emotions going around because obviously I'm leaving for a while."
Emma, who is expecting her first child with businessman partner Tom, explained: "I am leaving, probably for about a year because I'm leaving to have a baby which is really exciting.
"I will miss Emmerdale so much but it is a new little journey in my life that I'm taking on now. Argh! I can't wait to come back - hopefully within a year."
Emma's co-star, Charley Webb, offered her congratulations via Twitter, saying: "Finally everyone knows Emma is leaving to have a baby. Can't wait to be an 'Aunty' again… Emmerdale will miss 'Charity' but she'll be back."
Last night, viewers watched Charity get sent down and also saw her confess her love to ex Cain Dingle, despite him being married to Moira.
"I hope some of you are pleased with the outcome, I know I certainly am," Emma continued. "I think it is only right that Charity is brought to justice and goes to prison for two years. But, don't worry, I'm sure she'll be out on good behaviour."
