James Arthur has said he hopes One Direction fans have forgiven him after his comments about the boyband in the past.

X Factor winner James recorded a beautiful cover version of 1D's track 'Night Changes' which he posted to YouTube last night.

And he later joked that hopefully it was enough for One Direction fans to forgive him for past comments.

"Hoping some of the @onedirection fans have forgiven me for being an idiot a couple years back after my cover of and a big fat sorry!"

He added: "I went crazy is all lol."

James then tweeted directly to one followers: "I was going through a rough spot. I was having an argument with one fan that escalated. I've never disliked the band. I actually think they have really good songs! I wouldn't of covered them if I didn't."

Back in 2013, James described fellow X Factor stars One Direction as a "marketing product" during a Twitter rant, and later tweeted: "F**k boybands. Bring on the hate. I don't wanna be popular. Apart from JLS who are genuinely the coolest people I've met in music."

James' focus for the New Year is his music.

He later took aim at One Direction member Louis Tomlinson in now-deleted tweets. He said members of the band had been "pretty awful" to him via text after he described them as a marketing product.

Now, however, he says all is fine between him and 1D.

Tweeting a fan today, James said: "I think me and the band are cool now."

James is starting the New Year with his focus on music, and we're hoping to hear some new material from him before the end of the year.

He tweeted recently: "This Christmas has really made me fully appreciate the value of family and friends. I hope to strengthen those bonds in 2015. #2014TaughtMe. 2014 has also taught me that even when the chips are down I still have an unbelievable fan base worldwide! The support has been exceptional."
