Oscar-winning actress Angelina contracted chicken pox last month which meant she was forced to pull out of the LA screening of her movie about Olympic athlete turned WWII solder Louis Zamperini.
Husband Brad Pitt attended in her place alongside their kids Maddox, 13, Pax, eleven, and Shiloh, eight.
"It was so absurd, what was even stranger was during the day before I was trying to do interviews and was thinking, 'What is happening to me?!'" she told Today.
"It was really fun my kids took the mantle. My kids took it very seriously when I said, 'You gotta represent mum and do this for me.' And they knew and loved Louis so they were excited about the mission."
Angelina also spoke about working alongside Brad in the upcoming movie By The Sea, in which she directs him as well as stars alongside him.
It is their first joint project since 2004 movie Mr and Mrs Smith.
Angelina said: "It was great. You get nervous because you love somebody and want to help them. As a director you want to help your actor, as a wife you really want to help your husband and you want everything to be right for them.
"We found if you work with the person you love and trust most in the world it's pretty great because you try things with each other. You love and trust and as an artist you get very bold because you're together."
Angelina and Brad married in August 2014 at their chateau in France surrounded by their children: Maddox, Pax, Shiloh, Zahara, nine, and six-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.
