He told us: 'I've never really thought of myself as a good-looking guy so the attention I've had has been amazing. It's humbling to be seen as as a heartthrob but it's very strange. It's certainly not how I perceive myself."
The former white van driver from Croydon, 29, also admits he used to be a bit of an ugly duckling, and struggled with his weight throughout his school years.
"Growing up, I was more conscious about my body image. I was definitely bigger as a kid and my weight fluctuated. It's always been up and down because I love my food."
And even though Ben says he had been hitting the gym in the X Factor house, the shy singer won't be whipping his kit off any time soon. Boo!
"I'm not one of those guys who just rips his top off and thinks that he's a crazy sex symbol," he laughs, referring to his fellow contestant and all-round showman, Stevi Ritchie.
Yet despite lacking confidence, he's pretty chuffed with his X Factor makeover.
But boys beware, because nobody gets away scott free when in the hands of Simon Cowell's make-up team!
"They pretty much ripped off all of the hair from my face at the start and then later preened my beard. They ripped by nostril hair out too. Jessica misses that but she likes the make-up they put on my age-riddled face," Ben jokes.
Ouch! So is this a wedding makeover in process, we wonder?
"I don't want to give too much away. But a proposal is definitely going to happen in the New Year," Ben says of popping The Big Question to his girlfriend of six-and-a-half years, Jessica Jones, 28.
"But it's not something that's going to be done on a TV programme," he insists, after almost proposing on Good Morning Britain but opting to say: "Jessica...will you...put the coffee on" instead!
"Our private life is private and we'll do it when we're ready."
