Jake was in a relationship with Victoria for four years before they agreed to take some time out in October, however it has been reported that they never decided to call it a day completely.
A source has since claimed Victoria only learned about his plans to enter the jungle - and that he was describing himself as "single" - after reading an interview with him.
Speaking to the Sunday Mirror, the friend said: "Jake asked for a break for a couple of weeks. She agreed because she thought he needed a bit of space.
"Then he turned up on I'm A Celebrity and she read interviews saying they'd broken up because Jake wanted to focus on his career."
It is believed the interview the pal is referring to is one with The Mirror, in which Jake said: "I am actually currently single. We broke up about a month ago.
"She is amazing and I know she will support everything anyway. We are gonna stay friends.
"It is just different life paths. I just really want to concentrate on my career now. I have been given two amazing opportunities."
Jake only had his first taste of fame a few months ago, after making it into the live finals of The X Factor. However, the singer - who was in Mel B's group - was voted out in week two following a sing-off with boy band Stereo Kicks.
Throughout his time on the ITV1 show, Victoria supported her boyfriend all the way and posted encouraging messages about him on Instagram.
Alongside a picture of herself and Jake, Victoria told her followers: "On my way to the xfactor again tonight to watch this one, he is doing so so well and i couldn't be prouder of how hard he's working."
Meanwhile, fans were left wondering this weekend whether Simon Cowell had made a deliberate dig at Jake for entering the jungle so soon after The X Factor.
Speaking on Saturday night's live X Factor show, Simon said: "There are people who come on this show who just want fame.
"They'll just do anything afterwards because that's why they've entered The X Factor."
Jake is currently facing elimination on I'm A Celebrity alongside his Wombat tribe mates - Melanie Sykes, Tinchy Strider, Jimmy Bullard and Carl 'Foggy' Fogerty.
