The bubbly Essex favourite, 34, stunned viewers when just 72 hours into the current series, she walked out of the jungle.
Despite initially defending her exit and saying she did the right thing for herself, Gemma has now confessed there is a part of her which regrets that decision.
Gemma told ITV's This Morning: "I regret it terribly because on a personal level it was the dream job I always wanted. I'm not a quitter. I would have gone in there to win it."
Gemma explained that she'd always wanted to be on I'm A Celebrity, ever since she first found fame on TOWIE: "I've wanted to go into the jungle for three and a half years... ever since I was lucky enough to come into TV, that was the one job that I wanted my whole life."
However, she said that a "horrific ordeal" had occurred just 24 hours before her flight to Oz – an ordeal that she did not share with producers at the time.
"What happened to me was horrific but I just thought, 'Gem, you've got to do this. You have to do this. Not only for yourself, but for everyone that has supported you throughout your years on TOWIE.' I didn't want to let anyone down."
But three days into the experience it became too much for Gemma, who sensationally announced she would be leaving.
Gemma explained that she asked for a private chat with crew and admitted she was struggling and felt she was bringing down everyone else in camp with her mood.
She said she told them: "I'm not Gemma, I am breaking down here… I'm a broken woman, I'm not able to cope with this, I thought I could be fun and upbeat."
"It wasn't me," continued Gemma. "It was odd. When I said I wanted to kill myself, I didn't really mean that - that was me being dramatic. But then I was moved into the other camp and I [still] couldn't hold it together and I looked around the camp and everyone in the camp was so lovely, they do not need me bringing them down. I went on the show so people could see other sides to me - but the girl you were going to see for the next three weeks was a total wreck."
Gemma added: "In hindsight, I never should have got on to the plane to go. I never should have. It's not the TV company's fault. I was trying to be 'upbeat Gemma' and they knew that something had gone on, but I probably covered it up a lot more because I didn't want to let them down - they'd given me such a massive opportunity."
Gemma concluded that she was "just gutted" because I'm A Celebrity had been her dream job but it "all went wrong" for her.
"But all of the campmates are doing amazing. You don't realise when you're in there that it is worse than what you see on the TV. Experiencing it for real life is unreal. I'm watching it and I love the show, definitely."
