One Direction's Liam Payne has hit back at claims he was faking smiles for fans while attending the ARIA Awards in Australia this week.

The 'Night Changes' singer was caught on video working his way along a crowd of fans this week alternating between beaming smiles and rather sulky face.

Take camera. SMILE. Stop smiling. Hand camera back.

Take next camera. SMILE. Stop smiling. Hand camera back.

You get the idea…

The rather funny video has been spreading like wildfire across social media, but has caused some fans to accuse Liam of not enjoying meeting them.

NOT TRUE, says Liam!

Hitting back on Twitter, he said: "Lots of people saying I was 'faking' smiles with fans yesterday… I usually find when you're taking a photo you don't smile until somebody's about to take the photo."

Alongside an emoji of a very happy face with a big toothy smile, he added: "Sorry to disappoint but I don't walk around like this all day. That would hurt!"

Fair enough!

And if anything, you could applaud his speedy, time-efficient way of making sure everybody gets their photo, right?

Liam and the rest of One Direction jetted into Australia for a whirlwind visit that saw them attend the ARIA Awards, the Aussie version of the Brits.

After, a happy Liam tweeted: "Thank you so much Australia you guys are amazing another great day and another award huge!!!!!"

But as much as he loved Australia, he seems all he wanted was to get back to the UK…

"So excited to go home and see someone special," he added.

Hmmm.. girlfriend Sophia Smith, maybe?!
