Gemma had been announced as a main presenter with Matt Johnson at the British Plus Size Awards, which is taking place in London this weekend, however organisers have now clarified that she had pulled out before flying to Australia.
Writing on their website, show officials said: "We are delighted that Matt Johnson has agreed to host this year's event, also Gemma Collins was due to co-host the show with Matt, however she went into the jungle!"
Triggering the confusion, a previous post had read: "Matt will be joined by co-presenter Gemma Collins, who gained success after appearing on ITV2′s The Only Way is Essex."
TOWIE star Gemma, 34, sensationally walked out of the jungle earlier today after she was previously shown struggling with the conditions, including lack of food and an upset stomach.
Although her rep has not commented on the exact reason behind her departure, she has confirmed that Gemma had pulled out of the awards several weeks ago.
"Organisers of the awards were told weeks ago that Gemma would not be there, confidentiality and contract negotiations with ITV prevented us telling them any sooner," her rep said.
"Gemma has absolutely no plans to be there at all and they know that."
Meanwhile, Gemma's walkout has surprised both her fans and TOWIE co-stars, including close friend Ferne McCann.
Appearing on This Morning today, Ferne said she is "shocked" Gemma has quit and added that perhaps the star wasn't "mentally prepared" for the challenge.
"She had so much going on before going into the jungle, and personal issues and I think maybe she wasn't as mentally prepared [as she thought] but how can you prepare for something like the jungle?" she asked.
Since her departure, Gemma's rep has also rubbished claims that she will be paid her full fee due to a '72-hour' clause in her contract.
It was suggested that a celeb would be awarded full payment providing they managed three days in the jungle, however her rep insisted on Twitter: "The comments about @missgemcollins' jungle pay are laughable. Get your facts straight people.
"This is absolute RUBBISH."
