The 45-year-old actor received his long-awaited accolade during a ceremony on Monday (17 November) in Los Angeles.
Although sporting a scruffy beard, Matthew still looked handsome in a three-piece suit by Dolce & Gabbana.
"It's a special day, a great moment in my career and for my family," said Matthew, who spoke to some of Tinseltown's biggest stars at the event.
Joining Matthew on his special day was film producer Don Phillips and director Christopher Nolan, as well as Golden Globe winning actress Jessica Chastain, Oscar winner Anne Hathaway and Twilight star Mackenzie Foy.
Although Matthew was guest of honour, it was his three adorable children that stole the show.
The actor was joined by his biggest supporters - his wife Camila and their three children six-year-old Levi, four-year-old Vida, and Livingston, who turns two next month.
Matthew kickstarted his acting career in 1992 with an appearance on TV series Unsolved Mysteries, but his breakout film role came a year later in 1993 in Dazed and Confused.
Since then, Matthew has gone on to star in a range of movies, including 2003 rom-com How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, 2012 stripper film Magic Mike and 2013 crime comedy The Wolf of Wall Street.
It's been a particularly outstanding year for Matthew, who won a 2014 Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of an AIDS patient in Dallas Buyers Club. Fans can currently see Matthew as lead character Cooper in sci-fi film Interstellar.
