Gemma was inundated with messages from cast members and fans after they watched Carmel's emotional exit, which was shown on E4's first-look episode.
Titled End of the Line, viewers saw Carmel surrounded by her family members in tearful scenes after losing her life in an explosive train crash.
Gemma tweeted after the episode: "Well what an amazing last episode for #CarmelMcqueen thank you so much to @Hollyoaks @Channel4 for the past 8 years & such an amazing cast & crew.
"Will miss you guys millions thank you for everything, love you @Hollyoaks @Channel4 #EndOfTheLine #RIPCarmelMcqueen."
Gemma's co-star, Jennifer Metcalfe, showed her support by tweeting: "My beaut @GemmaMerna has flipping killed it! I love u Gem."
Meanwhile, Gemma's on-screen cousin Jorgie Porter, said: "Great to hear you were all balling your eyes out tweeples as we're all gonna miss @gemmamerna with all my heart."
Gemma's friend and former TOWIE star Sam Faiers also wrote: "Just watched @GemmaMerna's last ever scene in @Hollyoaks. Well done it was amazing... You will be missed on the show."
In August, Gemma announced her decision to quit Hollyoaks after eight years.
A month later Gemma told Reveal that she wanted a "new challenge".
She told us: "Carmel is obviously very dear to the heart. I've played her for eight years and I've absolutely loved every minute of it but I felt that I've explored every avenue with Carmel and every storyline possible for her."
Gemma was tipped to enter the jungle for this year's I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! but, despite speculation, Gemma was not on the list when ITV confirmed the official line-up yesterday.
Fans can watch Carmel's exit on Hollyoaks tonight (12 November) on Channel 4 at 6.30pm.
