Tissues at the ready…
The Sherlock heartthrob has always kept his private life firmly away from the spotlight, but eagle eyed readers of The Times newspaper have noticed an engagement announcement.
The simple announcement reads: "The engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katharine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London."
A publicist added to Sky News: "I am delighted to confirm this morning's announcement that Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are engaged."
Sophie is an actress and theatre director.
Many fans of the actor have congratulated him via Twitter and applauded the "classy" and discreet way his happy news was announced.
Benedict Cumberbatch engaged. Announced in The Times classified section, rather than a press release. Classy. pic.twitter.com/jJnYAwXqxf— David MacLean (@David_MacLean) November 5, 2014

Love the traditional & so simple announcement from Benedict Cumberbatch about his engagement!!— Nicki Moxon (@nickimoxon) November 5, 2014
According to the Mail On Sunday, actor Benedict, 38, flew to Scotland to seek Sophie's parents' permission before he popped the question.
The couple met back in 2009 but romance didn't blossom until later. They've gone to great lengths to keep their relationship away from the public eye and have rarely been photographed together.
