X Factor judge Mel B has joined her boys for a chat on Radio 1, but not before leaving them hanging because she was late!

Heading into the BBC Studios yesterday for their chat with Greg James, the X Factor boys - Paul Akister, Jake Quickenden, Andrea Faustini and Jack Walton - were left without their mentor Mel after she was running behind.

But acting like true professionals, the boys cracked on with the interview until Mel arrived and even refrained from dishing the dirt on the Spice Girl!

While waiting for Mel's arrival, radio host Greg said it would be the perfect time to find out all about the 39-year-old, but sadly for him, her boys were nothing but nice about their mentor!

X Factor hopeful Paul complimented Mel for being "the most down-to-earth person you'll ever meet". He said he thought Mel was "really good to have" as a mentor for the live shows because she is willing to work hard for her acts.

Agreeing with Paul, Jake - who has been cosying up to Cheryl Fernandez-Versini lately - told Greg that Mel makes sure to "look after her boys".

He explained: "She's always contacting us, messaging us, making sure we're in the gym, eating our vegetables… it's pretty funny."

But despite their new famous BFF, Jake did admit he is a little scared of Scary Spice...

He added: "I'm not going to lie, I'm a little bit scared of her! But, that's good because I don't want to let her down."

While Paul, Jake and Andrea secured a place in the live shows during Mel's Judges' Houses in Mexico, Jack was sent home. But luckily for him, he was soon snapped up as Mel's wildcard and brought back into the competition as a finalist.

Speaking about the moment Simon told him he had made the lives, Jack said: "I knew there was a call coming, but I was expecting a call from a fan across the country to ask me some questions. Obviously, when I answered the phone I recognised the voice...

"Simon said how do you feel about coming to do the show next year and I thought, 'It's one of those calls like, well done, you tried', but then he said he'd put me through to live shows – which was just mind blowing!"

Meanwhile, their mentor Mel finally arrived in the studio - ditching her zebra onesie for leather trousers and knee-high boots - and was quick to compliment her acts on their chat so far.

She joked: "I was listening to you all on the way in - you were all good... Thank God!"

After Greg quizzed her on how she is preparing her boys for their second live show performance, Mel quipped: "We've been going out getting drunk every night, we've been to a few strip joints..."

She then added: "No, these boys are good, they know it's a competition they've been looking after their voices and themselves."

All four boys performed live on stage for the very first time last weekend and successfully made it through to the second week of live shows. In the first X Factor elimination both Overload Generation and Blonde Electra were sent home.
