The 26-year-old from Scunthorpe auditioned for the ITV show two years ago but failed to make it past then-judge Nicole Scherzinger's Judges' Houses. This time around, however, it's been a different story.
Viewers saw him impressing judge Mel B and her guest judge Emma Bunton in Cancun, Mexico over the weekend, securing a place at this year's live shows - much to his shock!
Discussing this year's boys category, which includes Paul Akister and Andrea Faustini, he said: "I didn't think I was through. The group was so, so strong. They were all lovely guys, amazing voices."
But he added: "You don't need everyone in the category to sound the same. I'm just going to work. Work, work, work, and do what it takes."
"I want to do a bit of everything and show my versatility. I want to dance and move around, and sing ballads. I haven't got a big Whitney Houston voice but what I have got is a tone that I can use. I just hope people get behind me."
On last weekend's show, we saw the emotional moment Jake phoned his mother to tell her the good news that he was through to the next round.
"Oh, God she was delighted. She'd been having kittens all day, waiting. She was like, 'Jacob, I'm so proud'. She was really happy. I haven't seen her happy like that for ages. I didn't want to make her cry, I wanted to make her happy."
X Factor continues Saturday night on ITV1.
