The X Factor's Cheryl Fernandez-Versini has opened up about the 'nervous breakdown' that left her in a "dark, dark place".

The TV judge and singer, 31, admits she threw herself into family life and "normal stuff" to get back to reality after the ordeal.

In an interview with the Sunday People, the Girls Aloud star talks about her decision to take life less seriously from now on.

Cheryl, who wed second husband Jean-Bernard in July, tells the newspaper: "It will never happen again. I'm more conscious of the pressures now. I feel like a woman, I've grown up.

"I was burnt out and I wasn't taking notice. I should have listened to the signals just to slow down."

Cheryl admits she recuperated at home surrounded by what is most important to her - her family and dogs.

She says: "I just needed time for growth and peace and quiet.

"Being away gave me the opportunity to enjoy the simple things in life like playing with my dogs Buster and Coco.

"I've 11 nephews and nieces, ranging from two to 22. Having them down and going crazy in my house and wiping dirty handprints off the glass was just normal stuff.

"It meant getting back to reality and what really matters."

Cheryl has now returned to The X Factor - and the spotlight - after a four-year break.

With an album out in November and a new (rather handsome) husband by her side, Cheryl is riding high once again. She has finally been able to put a difficult few years, which included her 2010 divorce from footballer Ashley Cole, her battle with malaria and her humiliating sacking on US X Factor, behind her.

This weekend, X Factor fans will see Cheryl pick her top three girls for the live shows.

She also unveiled her music video for new single 'I Don't Care'.

The track is her second solo comeback single after her number one hit 'Crazy Stupid Love' with Tinie Tempah.
