Explaining why she kept it a secret, the 15-year-old explained: "I never told my parents I could sing. I guess I didn't believe in myself. But now it's much better. If I told my Dad I wanted to be a singer, before he was like, 'Oh yeah, like every kid does'. So I just kept it to myself."
At her first audition for Simon Cowell, Mel B, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Louis Walsh, she gained three yeses, but was turned down by Cheryl due to her age. However hard-to-please Simon was so impressed that he used Emily as an example of why they'd lowered the show's age limit.
While some may have concerns that Emily should be concentrating on her studies, it seems that things are all going well for the Glaswegian. She said: "I've done my exams and everything. We have Intermediates in Scotland. I got the As I wanted in music and drama. I wouldn't say it's a concern. I would love to do this (performing). I wouldn't have any second thoughts on it."
The talented teen plays both the guitar and keyboard and even won a Teen Star competition in Birmingham, but she admits X Factor has been her highlight so far. Emily revealed: "I'm really proud of where I've got. Not many 15-year-olds can say they've performed in Wembley Arena."
And now that she's jetting off to Niece for the Judges' Houses round, Emily can't quite believe where her voice has got her.
"It's absolutely crazy sitting in class and sometimes you go in to a wee daydream. You think, 'wait a minute, I'm going to Cheryl's house next week in France'. It's like, aargh!"
