And it was because the location of the awards show held a lot of meaning for himself and human rights lawyer Amal.

"I met my lovely bride to be here in Italy, whom I will be marrying, in a couple of weeks, in Venice, of all places," he told the audience at Celebrity Fight Night, while accepting a Humanitarian Award.

Venice is a surprise destination as many onlookers had presumed George and Amal would tie the knot at his beloved Lake Como.

According to reports, however, he decided his estate may not give him and Amal the privacy they want on their big day.

Rumours had been circulating recently that Venice had been chosen because of the privacy it would afford them and their celebrity guests believed to include newlyweds Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and Matt Damon. Earlier reports had suggested 12 September as a wedding date.

George and Amal became engaged in April.
