Gary Barlow returned to Twitter last night with a string of messages on everything from X Factor to Take That to those recent stories about his taxes.

Singer-songwriter Gary had been absent from the social media site since 7 May and he's now revealed he decided to step away from Twitter after his account was hacked and a deeply disturbing message posted.

The message was about his stillborn child.

Last night, Gary told fans: "I'm back from seven productive weeks in the US and I'm back on Twitter. I've had a break after someone hacked my account and some very upsetting and disturbing text was written.

"Over the summer I've remember that I have so many supporters, friends and fans on here so why let one person ruin all the fun?"

Gary then gave followers an update on what he's been working on, including a brand new studio album with Take That.

"We are extremely excited about it!" he said. "It has been four long years since the last one. It's so nice to be back in the band!"

He also revealed that his first musical, Finding Neverland, has opened for previews in Boston. "It's been an amazing experience and our show is heading for Broadway in early 2015."

Take That have been working on a new album.

Gary went on to give this year's X Factor panel a shout-out. He quit his role as head judge at the end of last series.

"Congratulations to all my friends at @TheXFactor for a great start to the series."

And, on a more serious note, he also addressed the stories earlier this year that he'd paid money into schemes set up to support the music industry but were ruled by a tribunal to be for tax avoidance.

"I want to apologise to anyone who was offended by the tax stories earlier this year. With a new team of accountants we are working to settle things with all parties involved ASAP."
