Speaking on BBC Radio 1 this morning, the head judge said he was considering placing some of the unsuccessful male solo artists who auditioned this year into a group, much like what happened with 1D three years ago.
Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik and Harry Styles all auditioned for X Factor in 2010 as solo singers before being thrust together into a band by the judges at the last minute.
The rest, as they say, is history!
X Factor kicked off its 11th series at the weekend, with Simon and fellow judges Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Louis Walsh and Mel B meeting the first of this year's hopefuls.
This morning on Radio 1, Nick Grimshaw aired an interview he'd done with the judges after the initial three stages of auditions. We're presuming he means room auditions, arena auditions and then boot camp.
And Simon teased viewers could see a One Direction-type supergroup this year as well.
Simon said: "We have just auditioned some guys who didn't make it through as solo artists so we're contemplating whether they could work as a group. They were too good to lose but there weren't enough places [for them as solo artists]."
Louis added: "It's an experiment. We don't know if it will work but it looks good so far."
X Factor airs Saturdays and Sundays on ITV.
