Singer-songwriter Matt beat One Direction and Rebecca Ferguson to win the seventh series of X Factor, so if anyone is qualified to dish out advice to this year's hopefuls it's him!
Appearing on ITV's Good Morning Britain, he said: "I'd tell them to enjoy every moment and be yourself. If someone is putting up a mask on as show that intrusive it won't hold up.
"And with regards to making compromises, if you stay the whole time you have ten weeks. You won't always wear what you want, you won't always get to sing what you want."
Matt pointed out his own compromises included wearing lemon yellow trousers.
Reflecting on his experience on the show, he said: "It was absolutely amazing, it really was. It was one of those things were you don't really realise what's happening until it's over. It's an incredible thing to be involved in. Absolutely mind blowing and what it's done for me is incredible."
After a difficult start to the year, that included a stay in rehab, it's good to see Matt looking happy again.
"I had my demons to face and battle early in the year but I'm good now," he said. "I think where I ended up it took me a long time to get there and it will take me a long time to get out of there but I'm on the right track now."
Matt's just finished touring and is preparing a new album for 2015.
