Scottish DJ Calvin wrote and produced Rita's chart-topping single, 'I Will Never Let You Down', so he owns full creative rights of the song.
Popstar Rita told Ryan Seacrest in a radio interview on Tuesday (12 August) that she was "p***ed" at not being able to perform at last Sunday's TCAs in Los Angeles.
Rita, who also hinted that her split with Calvin may not have been amicable, said: "[Calvin's] an incredible song writer and I'm never going to disregard his talents. He has to approve anything TV-wise, for anybody who doesn't get it. And obviously he owns the rights to it and he didn't approve the Teen Choice Awards."
A disappointed Rita added: "I could have got told a few weeks earlier. That would have been nice".

However, Calvin - who announced his split from Rita in June - has now responded to her recent interview by taking to Twitter this morning (13 August).
Calvin tweeted: "You'll only know one side of the story re: Teen Choice Awards because I choose not to talk to the papers about every aspect of my personal life. But just know I had a damn good reason."
Calvin then posted an emoji of a hand waving goodbye.

In June, Calvin announced via Twitter that he and Rita called time on their relationship, saying they had split "some time ago".
He said at the time (6 June): "To address speculation - myself and Rita ended our relationship some time ago. She is a beautiful, talented woman & I wish her all the best."
A week later, Rita broke her silence, telling fans that she "had an incredible time with Calvin and will treasure the memories", but wishes to move on.
