Little Mix have apologised to US fans after postponing their forthcoming North American 'Salute Tour'.

The chart-topping girl band - made up of Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson and Jade Thirlwall - sent out three separate apologies to disheartened fans after announcing plans to put their first US tour on hold to focus on their third studio album.

"Another big sorry to our American mixers," Little Mix tweeted. "We love you so much. This doesn't mean there won't be a tour it's just postponed for the importance of our album.

"We love you and we want to continue writing music that you love in which case we have to make time for studio! Please try to understand our decision, we promise to come out to see you all soon. Love Perrie, Jesy, Jade and Leigh xxx."

The girls posted a similar apology on their Instagram account (see below).

The former X Factor winners initially broke the news in the early hours of Friday morning (4 July) in a statement on their website.

They said: "As a group we decided that creating an amazing 3rd album had to take priority. We're so sorry to all the Mixers who bought tickets to come and see the show. As soon as the album is finished, we promise to make plans to return to the US and perform for you all."

A full refund will be available to all ticket holders at point of purchase.

In April, Little Mix excited fans with news of the tour, which would have seen them perform 19 shows across the pond in September and October. At the time, the girls said it was a "dream come true" to headline their first tour.

Little Mix won series eight of The X Factor in 2011 and have achieved record-breaking success in the States since signing a US record deal with Columbia Records in 2012.

Last year, they made chart history by achieving the best-selling debut album by a British girl group in the States - a record previously held by 90s pop group the Spice Girls.

Just two weeks ago, Leigh-Anne and Jesy told Reveal that their US success felt "very surreal". They said: "It feels amazing. We just feel like we're in a little bit of a bubble at the moment. We're taking everything as it comes but we're just working really hard and we just want to get to the top!"

The girls also expressed their desire to sell out Madison Square Garden in the near future.
