The former Girls Aloud star is just back on the scene after an extended break, debuting her brand new song 'Crazy Stupid Love' to radio on Monday morning (2 June).
Chatting on Radio 1's Breakfast Show, she said of her time away from the limelight: "It's the first time I've taken some time off in ten years.
"I had been on my solo tour, went straight into the Girls Aloud tour. I was burnt out. I needed time to refresh. I partied and did normal stuff over the past year. You don't actually realise until you get off the treadmill and stop how insane it is.
"I just needed it. I partied, travelled, spent time with my friends and family and dogs."
Cheryl went on to say although she enjoyed her time away, she's excited to be back in the music scene with her new song and album, which follows later this year.
Is she worried that other artists might have taken her place? "I don't see it as competition," she said. "I enjoy other female artists and I think they are going well at the moment and overtaking the males by a margin."
Cheryl's new song 'Crazy Stupid Love' had its first airplay today, but she's still whittling down the other songs that will be on her next album, the follow-up to 2012 record A Million Lights.
Discussing how she chooses tracks for her album, she said: "I play the music to my family. I put headphones on them and watch their reactions. If it's not what I want, I say, 'That's not going on the album'. When it's the first time you've listened to something, you can't hide what you are thinking. I watch their body language."
As well as working on new music, the starlet will return to TV screens later this year as a judge on X Factor, after signing a deal to join Simon Cowell on the judging panel.
