Footage was published this week showing Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson sharing a lit cigarette while being driven around Peru on tour.
Louis is heard making references to 'Mary J' and says at one point: "Here we are leaving Peru, joint lit, happy days."
Fellow band members Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Liam Payne are not seen in the video.
The video has sparked headlines across the world and a deep divide between 1D fans, some of whom are defending Zayn and Louis and saying they don't care if it was marijuana, and others who have been disappointed.
It's claimed some let down fans have even gone as far as burning tickets for the band's upcoming concerts.
But leaping to their defence today, journalist and interview Piers Morgan tweeted: "This @onedirection bashing's over-the-top. Two of them made a silly mistake. But from my experience, they're a good bunch of lads."
Piers spent time with the band at the weekend taking part in a charity football match day, where naughty Harry caused a stir by whipping down Piers' shorts.
Clearly there are no hard feelings, though.
And he has a bit of history with the group: back in 2012 he became embroiled in a comical spat with them that resulted in the hashtag, 'Piers Morgan Is Smelly' trending on Twitter.
It all started when Piers suggested David Beckham should retire from football, prompting Harry and Louis to voice their love for Becks.
A back and forth followed between Piers and the singers – and their fans! – resulting in him tweeting: "Can't believe I'm currently being slagged about Beckham by TWO members of One Direction. Boy-band types clearly stick together."
1D then urged fans to get 'Piers Morgan Is Smelly' trending. Which, naturally, it did! Ooops. Seems they're on good terms now, though!
