One Direction's alleged marijuana video is bad for Peru's image, according to a senior police officer from the country.

The 'Best Song Ever' band hit the headlines yesterday when a leaked video appeared to show singers Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik smoking weed while driving through Peru on tour.

In the footage, published by Mail Online, the young stars can be seen passing a lit cigarette between them, while references are made to 'Mary J' and apparently evading police who are driving near them.

At one point, Louis is heard musing: "I'm just wondering now, sitting here in Peru, will this come back to me? Who knows? Maybe. Maybe not."

However, in a statement to Mail Online, a member of the Peruvian National Police's Anti-Drugs Department says they do not plan to prosecute anyone involved in the video.

Senior Officer Ivan Valero is quoted as saying: "What happened with the group is that they bought the drugs on the road. There are many places where these drugs are available and it wouldn't have been hard for them to come by.

"Peru has large problems with drug trafficking and the fact that this group has publicised its use of drugs in our country is bad for our image."

Louis and Zayn have yet to publicly address the video, while a rep for One Direction has only said the footage is now in the hands of lawyers. Fellow singers Niall Horan, Harry Styles and Liam Payne were not in the car when the video was taken.

It appears the video was filmed by Louis as only his voice is heard in the footage.

As Zayn takes a drag on the lit cigarette, Louis can be heard in the background saying: "That's just Zayn warming up before the show. Zayn takes his job very seriously. He makes sure he goes through a two hour intense warm-up regime before every show… One very important part to Zayn's warm up is, of course, Mary J herself."

Louis also speaks when he sees a police officer driving past the car. "He's having a look. He's thinking, 'I'm sure I can smell an illegal substance in there' and he's hit the nail on the head."

Response from fans has been mixed with some vowing to stand by the group, while others have expressed their disappointment and even gone as far as burning tickets for the band's upcoming tour dates.

Last night, it was business as usual for 1D, as they continued their sold-out 'Where We Are Tour' with a performance to thousands in Sunderland.
