George Clooney's father says he's "thrilled" about the actor's engagement to lawyer Amal Alamuddin.

Plenty of fans were rather stunned over the weekend when it emerged ladies' man George had popped the question to his British-based partner of around seven months.

While neither George nor Amal have publicly commented on the engagement, it's been confirmed by both Amal's legal colleagues and now George's dad Nick.

Nick, 80, who is a veteran US journalist, anchorman and television host, gushed to Us Weekly: "We have had an opportunity to interact with this wonderful young woman and these are two great people."

He added to E! News: "We are very pleased. We like Amal and we are very excited for our family and thrilled for them."

Nick's comments echo those of George's mum Nina also revealed her pleasure at the engagement.

George and Amal have kept their romance largely low-key, but it's believed they began dating around October last year.

It will be the second marriage for George, who was previously wed to actress Talia Balham from 1989 until 1993.

Fans were surprised by his engagement to Amal as he's always been viewed as the ultimate Hollywood bachelor thanks to a string of high-profile relationships with beautiful women that have ended without a ring.
