'Umbrella' singer Rihanna marked her mum Monica Braithwaite's big day on 5 April with a sentimental message giving public thanks for the lessons she'd learned from her beloved mother over the years.
Rihanna wrote: "Queen, Goddess, Number One, Role Model, Angel..... A million words I can use to try to describe this courageous, fearless, selfless woman .... but at the end of the day no word makes her feel more special than MUM!!! How lucky am I to have come here through you?"
Barbados-born Rihanna continued to say her mother had "nurtured, taught and cultured" her over the years, adding: "And then some things couldn't be taught, but were inevitable simply because I'm your daughter, this is why I say "how lucky...?". Nothing could have prepared me for this world more than you did!
"Thank you for always saying the right things at perfect times, thank you for ACTUALLY ALWAYS knowing like you always say mums do, thank you for putting your needs aside for your three lil' monsters and anybody else."
RiRi also thanked her mum, a retired accountant and mother-of-three, for keeping her grounded and never letting her get out of line.
Rihanna's emotional thanks to her mother came the year after Monica publicly praised her famous daughter at the American Music Awards.
In November 2013, Monica took to the stage in LA to present Rihanna with the first ever 'AMA Icon Award', telling her: "I'm so proud of you."
Embracing her daughter on stage, Monica said: "I know the journey in your career has not always been an easy one, but I applaud and admire you for being so strong and so positive and so humble and so focused. It's amazing how you always manage to take good from all your experiences. I'm so blessed to be a part of this historic moment!"
