The show's official Twitter account tweeted yesterday evening (31 March): "Okay, we can OFFICIALLY say it! WE ARE SO #HAPPY to announce PHARRELL WILLIAMS = #NewVoiceCoach."

Retweeting the message, Pharrell said: "This is going to be so fun."

The current season features original coaches Blake Shelton and Adam Levine and returning coaches Usher and Shakira. After the news, Adam tweeted: "@Pharrell Welcome to the circus dude!"

Pharrell, who released his chart-topping album G I R L last month, was behind two of last year's biggest summer tracks, Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky' and Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines'.

He also wrote both Despicable Me soundtracks and was nominated for an Oscar for 'Happy'; which was taken from Despicable Me 2.

Pharrell, who married long term partner Helen Lasichanh in October last year, gained a large fanbase in the late 90s as one half of The Neptunes, along with his music production partner Chad Hugo. He continued to show his versatility as the lead vocalist of rock and hip hop group N.E.R.D.

Throughout the years, Pharrell has become one of the most respected figures in the music industry, and is often called a 'musical genius' by his peers. He has worked with some the world's biggest artists including Justin Timberlake, Jay Z, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Shakira and Snoop Dogg.

Being on The Voice US will be familiar ground for Pharrell, who actually appeared on the show in season four when he mentored Usher's team for the battle rounds.

Having produced and wrote a ton of number one hits, Pharrell will no doubt be able to offer invaluable advice to singing hopefuls. We can't think of a better person to coach!

"Pharrell's dominance in record sales in 2014, coupled with his incomparable accomplishments in the world of fashion and design, make him an irresistible addition to The Voice family," said NBC boss Paul Telegdy in a statement.

"He has already made a considerable impact as a mentor, drawing on an impressive track record as both a producer and performer. It is a perfect fit for The Voice as we evolve and reach for new heights with this franchise. It feels like we are welcoming an existing family member home."

Cee Lo announced in February that he would not be returning to the show, which works on a rotating schedule of coaches. Shakira and Usher stepped in this year for Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo during seasons four and six.

Adam and Blake are the only two judges who have appeared on every season of the reality competition. The full coach lineup will be announced at a later date.

Elsewhere, Pharell will be gearing up to perform at this year's Wireless Festival in July.
