Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth and Coldplay musician Chris announced their split via Gwyneth's Goop lifestyle website on Tuesday night (25 March), but insisted they will always remain a family for the sake of children Apple, 9, and Moses, 7.
In a blog post titled 'Conscious Uncoupling', they wrote: "It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate.
"We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate."
"We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been," they added.
The statement concluded that family came first for the Hollywood couple, who described their children as "wonderful" and requested privacy at this time.
They said: "We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner."
American-born Gwyneth and British singer-songwriter Chris married in a surprise ceremony in Santa Barbara, California back in 2003, and had split their time between LA and London.
Notoriously private when it came to their relationship and children, the couple were rarely photographed either together in public or with each other on the red carpet.
