The Loose Women panel grilled TOWIE star Joey Essex today over his relationship status with ex-girlfriend Sam Faiers.

Joey appeared on the ITV chat show to discuss his new reality show, Educating Joey Essex, but the 23-year-old was also asked if he had rekindled his romance with Sam.

Recent reports have indicated that Sam and Joey have given their relationship another go following Sam's recent diagnosis with Crohn's Disease.

"We're not back together, but we're talking," said Joey. "I'll always care for Sam. Always. All my life."

After more grilling, Joey repeated to the panel that the pair "were just talking" but he was also full of praise for former fiancée Sam and hinted that a reunion is likely.

"She's a lovely girl and we spent a lot of time together in our years. We've always loved each other and stuff.

"We're just seeing how things go and I'm just there for her to keep her happy."

Speaking about his new show, which will air on ITV this month, Joey said the trip was an eye-opener: "I didn't really know much about animals and what animals are like out there in Africa. There's so many weird things in the world.

"I was out there and there were these people crushing baboon skulls and they said if you rub it on you afterwards it makes you really clever. I was like 'What? Get me some of that!' How weird is that?

"The concept of the show was to learn about monkeys and gorillas. They're quite nice animals and one brushed straight past me and did nothing.

"But I met a little monkey, a pet one, and it bit me on the arm. The ones in their natural habitat don't do anything."

Speaking about the conditions of his trip to Africa, Joey continued: "When I first got there I went to a neighbourhood and I was out of my comfort zone. That was hard. It was humid and sweaty. They had no showers and I feel like I got really fat out there.

"I was there for 12 days and that was three weeks after I came out of the jungle. I had to have nine injections all in all and then getting out there, they put more injections in me. It was hard."

Educating Joey Essex airs on Sunday 16 March at 9pm on ITV2.
