Girls star Allison Williams has admitted she was completely stunned by boyfriend Ricky Van Veen's proposal.

Actress Allison, who plays Marnie on the hit sitcom, confirmed on 26 February that she'd become engaged to her boyfriend of three years.

Chatting on US show Late Night with Seth Meyers, Allison said: "I was completely surprised! It was the best kind of surprise. It feels a little different (now). Just the investment is there! It changes the stakes – clearly! It's really fun."

Allison, 25, admitted she was surprised to be surprised by the engagement as she considers herself pretty good at avoiding those situations.

"I consider myself someone who is impossible to surprise. I walk around the world poised and ready for a surprise. On my 25th birthday it was particularly bad. I went to the movies and opened the movie theatre door and said, 'Everyone is here that… I don't know. A room of strangers. Got it.' Or I'd walk into a restaurant and be, 'Hey… people in restaurant I don't know.'

"It could mean I'm in a constant state of disappointment but instead it means I live life one potential surprise to the next."

Allison showed off her gorgeous engagement ring on the talk show, just two days after debuting it at the Vanity Fair post-Oscars party in Los Angeles, where she looked stunning in a hot pink gown.

She said of her ring: "I'm obsessed with it, I stare at it a lot!"
